Defense Committee of Extremadura

The Defense Committee of Extremadura was the first autonomous territory in the history of Extremadura. It was created by some Columns of the CNT's Confederal Militias, such as 'Águilas Libertarias' and 'Columna Mangada', which entered in Extremadura in 1940 during the WWII supporting a peasants revolt. The 'capital' of the Committee was Don Benito, which had a large fortification made some years ago during the Civil War by the Republican Army in 'Sierra de Ortiga'. The Committee controlled a large zone in the center of the region. During its existence it collectivized latifundiums, which gave it a bigger popularity among day labourers.
The reason of the eagle is the symbol of liberty it was for peasants, who saw Imperial Eagles as free and strong animals when they were at countryside working, and it was the symbol of the FIJL (Iberian Federation of Libertarian Youths). The Imperial Eagle was included in the Coat of Arms of the Socialist Republic of Estremaura after the 1956 Revolution, inspired by this flag.
